Area Nurses Honored for Exceptional Patient Care

CINCINNATI—The University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Nursing will honor 16 nurses at the 15^th annual Florence Nightingale Awards for their dedication and commitment to providing exceptional patient care. The recipients of this year’s awards will be recognized April 26, 2007, at the downtown Cincinnati Hyatt Regency.

The honorees work in our community in a variety of ways.

They help children get dental screenings, provide care and advocacy for indigent and mentally challenged people in Cincinnati’s inner city, and even sing for patients in the final moments of their lives.

But while they may have different responsibilities, they all share something in common—dedication and commitment to exceptional patient care.

Patients, family, friends of patients, colleagues, physicians and other health care workers in Greater Cincinnati nominated more than 400 nurses for this year’s awards, named for the founder of modern nursing.

Six nurses will receive the Florence Nightingale Award and $1,000, and 10 nurses will receive the Dean’s Award and $400 each. The awards are funded by sponsors.

• Emma Bunag-Boehm, Cincinnati Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center

• Cindy Edmisten, Brown County General Hospital

• Janice Jones, Summit Behavior Health Center

• Linda Jones, St. Elizabeth Medical Center

• Margaret Miller, Cincinnati Health Department

• Laura Nusekabel, Mercy Hospital Mt. Airy

• Kimberlee Sandusky, Cincinnati Health Department

• Susan Weber, University Hospital

The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a private reception for the winners, the College of Nursing board of advisers and sponsors. The optimal time for media to talk to recipients will be at the reception.

The reception will be followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The awards ceremony is from 7:45 to 9 p.m. Nearly 900 people attended last year’s event.
