Associate Dean Position Created to Enhance Pediatric Education and Care

CINCINNATI—The University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Nursing has created an associate dean position to enhance its pediatric education and nursing practice models.

Cheryl Hoying, PhD, senior vice president of patient services at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, has been selected to fill the role.

“We have a longstanding partnership with Children’s on multiple academic projects such as student co-op,” says Andrea Lindell, PhD, dean of the College of Nursing. “This new collaboration will allow us to strengthen existing projects as well as developing new ones.”

Hoying, a registered nurse, says she is honored to receive the appointment and reconnect with UC, where she earned her PhD in nursing with a focus on nursing administration research.

“UC has a nationally noted nursing program,” says Hoying. “I look forward to increasing our partnership by building on the joint initiatives that are currently under way, and I especially hope to collaborate more in the area of nursing research in the future.”

Says Lindell, “In this time of national shortage of nursing faculty, we’re delighted that Cheryl will be helping us strengthen the clinical pediatric care taught to and practiced by our students so they’re well-prepared to provide exceptional care for children and their families.”

In addition to enhancing pediatric nursing care locally, the partnership is helping develop care and curriculum on an international level. Currently, UC and Cincinnati Children’s are working with King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to improve its nursing care and programs.

At Cincinnati Children’s, Hoying is responsible for about 4,000 patient services employees in numerous areas, including nursing, child life, respiratory care, nutrition services, pharmacy, social services, audiology, speech pathology, occupational and physical therapy, and volunteer services.

Prior to joining Cincinnati Children’s in January 2006, Hoying was the administrator of patient care services at Ohio State University.

Hoying earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing and her master’s in nursing administration from Wright State University. She is a graduate of the highly selective Johnson & Johnson–Wharton Fellows Program in Management for Nurse Executives at the University of Pennsylvania.
