UC, Affiliates Report $418 Million in Research Funding

CINCINNATI—The University of Cincinnati (UC) and its affiliates topped $418 million in research funding for fiscal year 2011. UC alone received $251 million in research funding. 

The 2011 fiscal year was marked by strengthened partnerships from the industry, nonprofit and national sectors, according to interim vice president for research William Ball, MD. He presented the annual research numbers to the UC community at the Board of Trustees meeting held Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011. 

Although a decrease in overall funding for UC and its affiliates as compared with 2010 ($443 million), the drop correlates with the maturation of one-time funding opportunities from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA). In 2010, UC and its affiliates received $65.5 million in ARRA funding. In 2011, that number was $47.9 million. 

"ARRA funding accounted for a significant portion of our increase in research funding the past two years and we’re seeing reductions now because those contracts are tapering off,” explains Ball. "The good news is that the rest of research funding remains steady and strong, despite challenging economic times.”

Ball adds that industry partnerships continue to be an important component of UC’s research mission. In the 2011 fiscal year, UC was awarded $18.9 million from industry collaborators—a 24 percent increase from 2010 (more than $15 million). 

UC also experienced notable growth in technology transfer activities in 2011, with 106 invention disclosures and 70 patent applications. 

Moving into fiscal year 2012, Ball says UC will encourage growth in the research enterprise through three central areas: 
  • Creating a system for strategically targeting key federal funding opportunities aligned with the strategic goals of UC
  • Emphasizing and targeting opportunities to increase industry funding  
  • Enabling faculty researchers to be innovative by rewarding entrepreneurship
UC remains designated as a "very high research activity” university by the Carnegie Commission and is listed by the National Science Foundation as No. 25 among public institutions for federal research expenditures and 47th in overall federal research expenditures. 

Affiliates included in UC’s research-dollar total are Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the Cincinnati Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Shriners Hospitals for Children–Cincinnati and clinical trials at UC Health University of Cincinnati Physicians, the private-practice group for clinical faculty members at the College of Medicine.
