Focus on Staff With Kim Weingartner
Every department has its "go to people, and in the department of orthopedics, you can count on Kim Weingartner to either knowor know how to obtainanswers with regard to departmental operations here. In addition to being the residency coordinator, Weingartner serves as the administrative assistant to the residency program director Keith Kenter, MD, an associate professor of orthopedic surgery. She also has a hand in the clinical practices marketing and promotional event planning efforts. Weingartner joined the department in 2001, but she has a longer history at the Academic Health Center.
How long have you been here and what was your background before this?
"I have been working here on the UC medical campus for almost 20 years. I spent nine and a half years working for the Mayfield Clinic (neurosurgery) prior to coming on board with the orthopedic department. I began working at Mayfield as summer help and then became full-time. I did everything from medical records, to a registrar, to medical assisting, medical secretary and operations manager assistant. I pretty much worked my way from the bottom up."
What is the greatest change in the students youve seen in your time here?
"Over the years, one of the greatest changes I have seen is in the culture and lifestyles of the residents. When I started back in 2001, the residents worked 24/7, and orthopedics was a male dominated specialty; very few residents were married. Over the past ten years, five women have matched into our program. Orthopedics is no longer a mans world, and due to recent changes in duty hours set by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, more residents are coming into the program married and already have families. I believe that limiting work hours enables the residents the opportunity to accomplish personal milestones of getting married and having a family."
Do you have any hobbies?
"Outside of work, I most enjoy traveling. I also enjoy attending both UC and the Bengals football games."
