Match Day 2012: Complete Results and Video

Each year, medical students across the country count down the days to the Match Day event in mid-March. It’s the day when they learn where they’ll spend their residency training.

The "match” is managed by the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) and is celebrated differently at different institutions nationwide. At UC, the excitement unfolds one student—and one envelope—at a time.

It’s an event built on much anticipation and filled with emotion and today’s Match Day was no exception.

It’s also an experience that stays with these students for years to come. Aurora Bennett, MD, associate dean for student affairs and admissions and "co-host” of this year’s event along with Bruce Giffin, PhD, of medical education, calls her own Match Day experience "unforgettable.”

Here’s a portion of the breakdown for UC College of Medicine’s Class of 2012:

• Of the 146 UC students matching at the March 16 event, 60 (41 percent) will stay in Ohio for their primary residencies. (An additional eight students will complete secondary residencies in the state.)
• Of those, 27 will complete all or a portion of their residency at UC Health University Hospital and
• Two students will complete pediatric residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

According to NRMP, 38,377 students applied for the 2012 residency match and more than 95 percent of U.S. medical school seniors matched with residency programs—the highest rate in 30 years. Specialties with the largest increases in matches were internal medicine, anesthesiology and emergency medicine—with emergency medicine filling every available position across the country.
