Ottawa, Ohio, Native Receives Schmidlapp Medical School Scholarship
CINCINNATIUniversity of Cincinnati (UC) medical student Julia Jones of Ottawa, Ohio, is the 2012 recipient of the Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Scholarship.
The $15,000 scholarship is awarded annually on the basis of outstanding academic achievement, community involvement, leadership and involvement in womens health care.
Jones, about to begin her fourth year at UCs College of Medicine, graduated from the University of Cincinnati summa cum laude in 2009 with a bachelors degree in biomedical engineering. As an undergraduate, Jones was an honor student who also worked in research labs, led the student orientation for incoming freshmen at UC and took part in service activities in the Greater Cincinnati area.
Jones entered the College of Medicine in 2009 through UCs dual admissions program. As a first- year medical student she was selected to be the colleges representative to the Association of American Medical Colleges Organization of Student Representatives (AAMC OSR) and in her second year she served as a coordinator of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Student Self Study Committee.
Says Jones: "The Schmidlapp Scholarship Fund provides emerging female professionals with an incredible opportunity to pursue their career goals and with so many talented women at UCs College of Medicine I feel extremely honored to be selected and hope to use this scholarship to further pursue my passion for academic medicine.
The Schmidlapp scholarship supports one of the priorities of Proudly Cincinnati, UCs $1 billion fundraising campaign, to transform higher education through private support.
The scholarship is financially assisted by the Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Fund, Fifth Third Bank, Trustee, and the funds are connected by history to Jacob Schmidlapp, a prominent Cincinnati banker and philanthropist whose Union Savings Bank merged with Fifth Third in 1919. The trust has contributed over $1.6 million toward art, health and community initiatives. The scholarship celebrates the memory of Jacobs daughter, Charlotte.
Jones is also the recipient of a Choose Ohio First Scholarship and is interested in a career in internal medicine/pediatrics.
