Pharmacy Event Gives Students a Sampling of Student Organizations

At "A Taste of Pharmacy” Wednesday, Sept. 5, first-year pharmacy students went away with more than the foodstuffs offered up over the lunch hour. What they were really meant to leave with was a taste of information from about a dozen booths that showcased student academic and professional organizations.

"Most people join two or three, but you are not required to join any of them,” third-year PharmD student Audra DeChristopher explained at the table where she represented Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS), a national pharmacy leadership society.

The booths were staffed by active student participants, most of whom serve on executive committees to the organizations, said DeChristopher, who is president of UC’s PLS chapter.

Volunteering at this event, which took place in the Health Professions Building, was of particular interest to DeChristopher, she said, because as a first-year student "it had a big influence and made me want to join … and now I am actively involved.”

The organizations are diverse in purpose, some covering pharmacy as a general profession while others are geared to specific areas of pharmacy such as hospital pharmacy or community pharmacy.
