Adams Named Interim Chair of Dermatology

Brian Adams, MD, has been named interim chair of dermatology effective Jan. 1, 2013. Adams will replace Diya Mutasim, MD, who has served as chair for 14 years.

Dr. Mutasim requested to step down as chair in August 2012 to focus on his subspecialty area, auto-immune skin disorders, dermatopathology and teaching.

Adams received his bachelor’s in science from Yale College and his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine. In 2004, he received a master’s in public health from Harvard School of Public Health. He completed his internship and residency at the UC College of Medicine and joined the faculty of the Department of Dermatology in 1999.

Within the department, Adams serves as residency program director and director of medical student education. He has a teaching relationship with a number of other residency/fellowship programs, including orthopaedics, sports medicine, plastic surgery, med/peds, podiatry, geriatrics and family medicine, teaches in the undergraduate athletic training program in the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services and has also taught in the James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy.

Adams is a board-certified dermatologist who directs dermatology for the Cincinnati Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He leads the UC dermatology department’s sports medicine clinic and previously directed the dermatology ambulatory clinic at the Hoxworth Center. He is the official dermatologist for the Women’s Tennis Association.  

A regular invited speaker at regional and local events and national meetings and member of many national committees related to sports medicine/sports dermatology, Adams authored the book "Sports Dermatology,” which was published in 2006. His ongoing research focuses on skin cancer prevention among athletes.

He has authored or co-authored more than 120 manuscripts, abstracts and book chapters—including the chapter on sports dermatology for the International Olympic Committee’s medical textbook—and has served on the editorial board for several major journals.

Adams is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the Cincinnati Dermatological Society and the Academy of Sports Medicine.
