College of Medicine Honors Day May 18

The UC College of Medicine will recognize 166 graduates during the 2013 Honors Day celebration, held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18, in the Aronoff Center for the Arts.

This year's Honors Day speaker is Thomas Graham, MD, a College of Medicine alumnus and vice chairman of orthopedic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. Graham also serves as Chief Innovation Officer and holds the Justice Family Chair in Medical Innovations at Cleveland Clinic Innovations. The title of his presentation is "After the Comma."

Graham also will receive the John Shaw Billings, MD, Alumni Leadership Award. Billings is one of the college’s most illustrious alumni. An 1860 graduate of the Medical College of Ohio—the forerunner of the UC College of Medicine—Billings was a Civil War Army surgeon who as head of the Army Surgeon General’s Library transformed it into the National Library of Medicine, created Index Medicus, planned Johns Hopkins Hospital and later served as the first director of the New York Public Library.

After their hooding, graduating students will recite the class oath that they wrote upon entering medical school along with the Hippocratic Oath.
