Donation Gives Medical Students Healthier Snack Options

Although there are times when nothing but the blast of sugar from a candy bar or cookie will ease your stress, these are not the best habits to form. Additionally, nutritional food boosts productivity and overall wellness.

With this in mind, College of Medicine alumnus Dan Asimus, MD, initially donated $500 to the UC Center for Integrative Health and Wellness to keep medical students, who no doubt experience high amounts of stress on a daily basis, snacking healthy and their minds and bodies going strong.

The new Healthy Food Corner, located in the office of IvaDean Lair, assistant dean of student affairs at the UC College of Medicine, offers students healthier snack choices including fruit, nuts and granola bars.

"Nutrition is such an important component to health and to keeping stress at bay,” says Sian Cotton, PhD, research associate professor in the department of family and community medicine and director of the center. "We’re really trying to emphasize self-wellness, and this is a great way to influence students to do what is right for their own health. We thank Dan for this support.”
