Fermann Publishes Cochrane Review on Nitrates

Gregory Fermann, MD, associate professor and executive vice chairman of emergency medicine, was just published in a Cochrane Review of "Nitrates for acute heart failure syndromes.”

Cochrane Reviews, systematic reviews of primary research in human health care and health policy, are often viewed as the pinnacle of evidence-based knowledge on a topic.
In their review, Fermann and co-authors studied the clinical efficacy and safety of nitrate vasodilators in acute heart failure syndrome (AHFS).

In reviewing four studies of 634 patients with AHFS employing two types of nitrates (isosorbide dinitrate and nitroglycerin), the research team concluded there is no significant difference between nitrates and alternative treatment interventions for patients with AHFS in terms of healthcare outcomes. Nitrates appeared to be well tolerated in all four studies.
