Cancer Survivorship Program Hosts Linda Jacobs During Consultation Visit

The UC Cancer Institute’s Cancer Survivorship Program Executive Committee sponsored a consultation visit with Linda Jacobs, PhD, director of the Living Well After Cancer Program, Abramson Cancer Center, University of Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, March 4, to learn more about developing the program at UC.

About 30 physicians, allied health professionals and nurses in the UC cancer community attended the visit.

"This event is viewed as a huge step forward in the development of the UC Cancer Survivorship Program,” said Beverly Reigle, PhD, director of the program, adding that the program’s executive committee will continue consulting with Jacobs as the program development and implementation progresses.

Jacobs developed the first adult cancer survivorship program in the country and participated in the Institute of Medicine initiative that resulted in the 2006 publication, From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: Lost in Transition.

Having been the director of the cancer survivorship program at Abramson Cancer Center for 13 years, Jacobs was well positioned to articulate the importance of having a cancer survivorship program at an academic-affiliated comprehensive cancer center, the various models of delivering cancer survivorship care, the advantages and disadvantages to each model and the importance of developing an electronic cancer survivorship care plan for each cancer patient.
