Cecil Striker Society Annual Lecture April 10
The Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions and the Cecil Striker Society for the History of Medicine will host the Cecil Striker Society Annual Lecture Thursday, April 10.
The evening will include a reception from 4-5 p.m with an exhibit on John Shaw Billings in the Lucas Room. At 5 p.m., Dale Smith, PhD, will present, "John Shaw Billings and the Medical College of Ohio: Shaping Twentieth Century Medicine, in Kresge Auditorium.
Smith is senior vice president of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) and chair of medical history in the F. Edward Hubert School of Medicine, USHUS.
Billings was an 1860 graduate of the Medical College of Ohio, precursor to the UC College of Medicine. An internationally known physician, medical librarian, public health innovator, educator and researcher, Billings advocated for changes in pre-, undergraduate and graduate medical education that are today standards of medical education.
In honor of Billings, the UC College of Medicine created and awarded in 2013 the first John Shaw Billings, MD, Alumni Leadership Award. The award will be presented annually at Honors Day to recognize an alumnus of the College of Medicine for a career of extraordinary leadership and contributions to medical progress.
