Focus on Staff With Steve Tomsic

Steve Tomsic describes himself as "a Bearcat at heart.” As business administrator for the department of neurology and rehabilitation medicine, he could be said to have UC on the brain, too. He took a few moments this week to answer some questions for us.

How long have you been at UC and what brought you to UC?

I truly am a Bearcat at heart. I received my bachelor’s degree here at UC and never left the city. I have been with UC Health since 2011 and joined UC last October. After nearly 20 years working in community mental health here in Cincinnati I wanted to expand my career into health care. UC’s academic health mission was a natural step to continue to be involved in serving this community.

What is a typical day like for you?

There are two constants in the life of an administrator: one is meetings and the other is email, and there are many of both. Like many roles here at UC, every day brings something new and different.

What do you enjoy about your job?

I really enjoy working with and for the staff and faculty in the department. It is always nice to visit a clinic and have patient interaction, even if it is simply a ‘Hello, how are you today?' I like to stay connected with why we do this work—serving patients.

Tell us something people wouldn’t expect about you.

My first job out of UC was working with the homeless mentally ill in Over-the-Rhine, back when OTR was much less than a dining and entertainment destination.  During that time I visited people under bridges and in camps down by the river. It was educational and rewarding work.

Aside, from work, what keeps you busy?

Twin 8-year-old boys—I probably don’t need to say more than that. As many know, when you are a parent your life is defined by your children's activities. So I am a cheerleader during sporting events, a treasurer at Cub Scouts, a part-time educator in the evenings and a chauffeur over the weekend.
