Free Integrative Medicine Clinics Held During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

To observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute’s Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center and UC Health Integrative Medicine have teamed up to offer free evening wellness clinics for patients as well as their friends and families.

Sian Cotton, PhD, UC associate professor of family and community medicine and director of the UC Center for Integrative Health and Wellness and UC Health Integrative Medicine, says there is evidence that integrative medicine, which is the use of mind-body techniques coupled with traditional therapies, improves outcomes for patients.

"Oftentimes, with chronic conditions come high levels of emotional and mental stress,” she says. "Patients who are using complementary medicine techniques have been shown to have improved health outcomes, leading to an overall happier healthier life.”

UC Health Integrative Medicine services have been available at the Barrett Cancer Center since January 2014, and experts are offering reflexology, acupressure, massage therapy and both standard and National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) auricular, or ear, acupuncture. Keith Wilson, MD, associate professor of otolaryngology and medical director of UC Health Integrative Medicine, will begin integrative oncology physician consults in the Barrett Center this fall.
