David Hui, PhD, Named Director of Metabolic Diseases Research Center

In an effort to expand multidisciplinary research at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine, David Hui, PhD, a professor in the department of pathology and laboratory medicine, has been named director of the Metabolic Diseases Research Center.

Hui, a leading researcher in lipid disorders as they relate to diabetes, obesity and coronary heart disease (atherosclerosis), has been at the medical college for 28 years and was formerly the department’s vice chair of research.

Hui will lead the center from UC’s Reading Campus, located 2180 E. Galbraith Road in Reading, Ohio, which is a hub for UC scientists involved in high-profile research initiatives such as diabetes and obesity, lipid and arteriosclerosis, fatty liver disease and cirrhosis, and cancer metabolism. The campus is also home to neuroscience, cardiovascular and cancer researchers whose work fits under the "metabolism” umbrella.

Hui, however, says he also wants to reach across to UC Health and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center campuses to create an all-inclusive environment that supports collaborative and translational research: "We have pockets of strengths in different departments, so what I would like to do is bring them together so that they can collaborate, and I want to talk to clinicians about how we can help humans.”

Hui was named director by Thomas Boat, MD, dean of the College of Medicine, who says: "The ‘center’ concept is where we need to be in terms of organizing research efforts for the future.”
