First Cincinnati Collaborative Cardiovascular Consortium Set for Nov. 8

CINCINNATI—The University of Cincinnati’s (UC) Division of Cardiovascular Health and Disease will host a regional symposium on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, at the Marriott RiverCenter in Covington, Kentucky, to tackle current issues in cardiology.

"The intent was to have a program that would attract people from all of the health systems in our region,” says Richard Becker, MD, director of the division of cardiovascular health and disease at UC and director of the UC Heart, Lung and Vascular Institute. "We extended invitations to area hospitals and we reached out to other heart practices as well.”

The event is free and registration continues this week. Physicians can obtain continuing medical education credits. The activity has been approved for 5.5 AMA PRA Category 1 credits through the University of Cincinnati Continuing Medical Education Office.

The symposium includes topic breakout sessions, panel discussions and keynote addresses from Ian Sarembock, MD, MBBS, interventional cardiologist, at Christ Hospital; Mohammed Effat, MD, associate professor in the division of cardiovascular health and disease at UC; Donald Wayne, MD, of Mercy Health Physicians; DP Suresh, MD, of St. Elizabeth Healthcare and several other physicians and medical staff in the region. 

Becker says he hopes the symposium will be an annual event that allows cardiologists and others who assist cardiovascular patients to receive ongoing training to stay abreast of emerging topics.

"The Cincinnati medical community has a storied history of excellence; there are very few cities in the country where one could find this level of expertise and great patient care,” says Becker. "Our thinking with this event was to embrace a clear opportunity to learn from one another and establish the foundation for a legacy that our community and region could participate in and be proud of. Indeed, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts and when we collectively achieve new heights of medical knowledge the people benefit.”
