Faculty Named Leaders in International Pharmaceutical Federation
Two faculty members from the James L. Winkle College of PharmacyGiovanni Pauletti, PhD, and Marianne Ivey, PharmD, have been elected to prominent leadership positions within the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP).
The FIP is the premier global federation of national associations of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, and is in official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO). Through its 132 member organizations, it represents over 3 million practitioners and pharmaceutical scientists around the world.
Pauletti, a pharmaceutical sciences researcher and professor at UC since 1998, was elected to serve as vice president on FIPs Council through 2018. He has been chair of the FIP Special Interest Group on Formulation Design and Pharmaceutical Technology since 2011 and also co-chairs the FIP programming committee.
FIP, says Pauletti, is dedicated to reducing the global burden of disease. Accomplishment of this goal, he says, is critically dependent on the synergy between pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy practice, so patients receive the best pharmaceutical care using medicines that are scientifically proven to be safe and efficacious.
"Over the past years, Ive had the privilege of jointly working with esteemed international practitioners and pharmaceutical scientists on many collaborative FIP initiatives in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas. In my new role as VP on the FIP Council, I will have an opportunity to develop new strategies for this global organization aimed at further improving access to and safe use of medicines worldwide.
Ivey, a professor and a pharmacy practice faculty at UC since 1988, has been elected president of the Hospital Pharmacy Section of FIP through 2018. Ivey recently concluded two terms as the FIPs vice president of the Hospital Pharmacy Section, representing the WHO global region called the Pan American Health Organization region (Canada, U.S. and Central and South America).
"The Hospital Pharmacy Section has a challenging agenda of improving pharmacy services delivered to hospitalized patients around the world through examples that include increasing clinical competency, protecting the security of the pharmaceutical supply chain to prevent counterfeit medications, working on issues of antimicrobial resistance and being prepared for the pharmacists role in containing and treating communicable diseases such as HIV and Ebola. It is an unusual and welcome opportunity to be able to work with a close colleague such as Dr. Pauletti in these global activities.
Every year, FIP organizes the World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, where thousands of pharmacists meet, learn and share and exchange views. Lectures, plenary sessions, poster exhibitions and section programs, together with Council meetings and the Leadership Conference make this event the premier international event in pharmacy each year. The social sidefinding new friends and greeting old onescomplements the varied Congress program. The annual congress also serves the Young Pharmacists Group with specially planned sessions and workshops focused on current issues facing this unique segment of the profession.
FIP also endeavors to support and organize a variety of symposia and short conferences throughout the year as educational opportunities to update knowledge and skills. For more information:
