Junior High Students Participate in Summer Health Professions Camp

Local students participated in a two-day mini boot camp where they had the opportunity to experience college-level courses and interprofessional teamwork in a simulated health care environment.

"In our research related to diversity efforts, we found that certain student populations were finding out too late what was necessary for success in college, particularly in the health professions," says Greer Glazer, PhD, dean of the UC College of Nursing. "This camp was designed to help overcome that barrier and connect with students early to allow them to make informed decisions before they get to high school.”

The attendees, who were students in grades seven through nine, were invited from rural counties, including Adams, Brown, Warren and Clermont. In addition to college-type experiences, students learned about the educational requirements needed to succeed in the health professions. This included information about test preparation, scholarships and financial aid.

"We’re working to ensure that all students are equipped with the knowledge they need to succeed in the health care professions,” Glazer says. "Ultimately, it’s the right thing to do for the community, as graduating a diverse workforce is the key to decreasing health care disparities that exist.”
