Congressman Chabot Tours UC Neuroscience Lab
U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot, who represents Ohios 1st District in the U.S. House of Representatives, visited the UC College of Medicine Monday, Sept. 21, for a laboratory tour and research discussion.
Chabot began his visit in the CARE/Crawley Building with a tour of the Selma Schottenstein Harris Laboratory for Research in Parkinson's, which is directed by Kim Seroogy, PhD. Seroogy, a professor in the Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine and vice chair of basic research in the department, is a member of the research team at the UC Neuroscience Institutes James J. and Joan A. Gardner Center for Parkinsons Disease and Movement Disorders.
During the tour, Seroogy gave an overview of his research, which examines the beneficial effects neuroprotective growth factors and the detrimental effects of stress and depression on the progression of Parkinsons. Seroogy was accompanied by Ryan Makinson, a doctoral student in neuroscience who helped coordinate Chabots visit.
Following the lab tour, Chabot, Seroogy and Makinson participated in a discussion of neuroscience research and training the next generation of neuroscientists at UC with Mark Baccei, PhD, Department of Anesthesiology and associate director of the Neuroscience Graduate Program; Marshall "Chip Montrose, PhD, vice provost and dean of the graduate school; and Mike Carroll, assistant vice president for government relations.
Chabots visit followed a visit earlier this month by U.S. Rep. Brad Wenstrup, who represents Ohios 2nd District in the House of Representatives. Chabot was also on the medical campus May 4 as a speaker for the opening ceremony of Research Week 2015.
