UC Anesthesiology Shows Strong at Regional Meeting

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine’s Department of Anesthesiology played a major role in this year’s meeting of the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists.

”I'm very proud of how well our students, residents, and faculty represented the University of Cincinnati at this statewide meeting,” department chair William Hurford, MD, said of the department’s high profile at OSA’s 76th annual conference in Columbus Sept. 26-27.

During the meeting Paul Wojciechowski, MD, associate residency program director, began his term as the president of the OSA and Michael Hawryschuk, MD, assistant residency program director, was elected to the office of secretary-treasurer.

Invited lectures were given by a number of UC Anesthesia faculty including James Bruns, MD, James Fortman, MD, Suzanne Bennett, MD, Gretchen Schultz, MD, and Helen Pappas, MD. They discussed clinical challenges and controversies and practice management. Erica Lin, MD, Raj Subramanyam, MD, and Diane Gordon, MD, from the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center anesthesia faculty, also were invited lecturers.

In addition to the lectures, Paul Wojciechowski, MD, J. P. Lawrence, MD, Benu Makkad, MD, and Michael Hawryschuk, MD, moderated educational sessions, and Suzanne Bennett, MD, Maggie Mechlin, MD, Erin Grawe, MD, Gretchen Schultz, MD, and James Fortman, MD, presented workshops.

"It’s great to be able to highlight our department and all the great work we do at UC Health.  The University of Cincinnati Department of Anesthesiology is intimately involved with the OSA and has put in a lot of effort into the society and this regional meeting.  We consider it an honor to be invited to participate in these educational events for our colleagues in the state of Ohio and look forward to continuing to build on this success in the future.  The hands-on workshops we presented were well attended and we were able to teach the newest in regional anesthesia along with critical care medicine,” said Fortman.

Desirae Christian, MD, a second-year resident with the department, was awarded the prize for "Best Case Report from a Resident."

The Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists is a statewide organization representing over 1,400 anesthesiologists and allied health providers. OSA promotes improved communication among its members and the advancement of anesthesiology within the medical profession. The OSA is a state affiliate of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).
