Biomedical Research Day Showcases UC and Cincinnati Children s Research
The College of Medicines Office of Graduate Education sponsored its annual Biomedical Research Day on January 7, 2016, in the Medical Sciences Building. The event targeted undergraduates interested in biomedical research opportunities at the College of Medicine and Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center and attracted college students and professors throughout the Tristate.
The events theme was the "Human Microbiome. Theresa Alenghat, VMD, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics, presented the lecture "The Host-Microbiota Relationship and Intestinal Homeostasis, while David Haslam, MD, an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics and director of the antimicrobial stewardship program at Cincinnati Childrens, lead an informal workshop on the microbiome.
Students attended tours and demonstrations that featured the Pluripotent Stem Cell Facility, a zebrafish research lab, and core facilities in genomics and epigenetics, Neuroimaging, Proteomics, and 2-photon microscopy. Undergraduates also learned about summer research opportunities as part of the SURF Program, attended a graduate fair featuring UCs nationally recognized PhD and MS Graduate Programs and heard from leaders of the MD/PhD degree Medical Scientist Training Program and College of Medicine and CCHMC graduate programs.
Theresa Alenghati, VMD, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the UC College of Medicine.
