Godby Wins HONORS Award

Richard Godby, a medical student completing his third-year at the University of Cincinnati, has won the nationally competitive Hematology Opportunities for the Next Generation of Research Scientists (HONORS) Award from the American Society of Hematology. He will receive $5,000 to conduct novel, high-impact research as well as a stipend to travel to ASH's annual meetings for the next two years to share his research findings and network with peers. 

Godby, a first-generation college graduate, is an alum of the UC Biomedical Engineering program. He graduated from that program as class valedictorian and was introduced to the field of Hematology-Oncology through his co-op rotation with Vladimir Bogdanov, PhD, director of the hemostasis research program and associate professor within the Department of Internal Medicine. Their work resulted in a first author, peer-reviewed publication in the journal Molecular Medicine. 

For the Honors Award, Godby, working in collaboration with Bogdanov, will focus his research on the effects of a high-fat diet on red blood cell kinetics in regards to their role as a circulating reservoir of chemokines that have recently been shown to contribute to systemic vascular dysfunction.
