Researchers Celebrated at Recognition Program

The College of Medicine celebrated its research successes and congratulated key contributors during the Research Recognition Program Sept. 22 in the CARE/Crawley atrium. During the event, faculty members within the college were recognized for their research excellence and contributions in four distinguished categories or as a member of the Gallery of Awardees, which have been announced throughout the year. 

Those being recognized include:

• Atsuo Sasaki, PhD, associate professor in the Division of Hematology Oncology within the UC College of Medicine and a member of both the UC Cancer and Gardner Neuroscience Institutes (nominated by Tahir Latif, MD), who received the Research Rising Star Award.
• Susan Waltz, PhD, professor in the Department of Cancer Biology and member of both the UC Cancer and Gardner Neuroscience Institutes (nominated by Jun-Lin Guan, PhD); Daniel Woo, MD, professor in the Department  of Neurology and Rehabilitation (nominated by Brett Kissela, MD); and Changchun Xie, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Environmental Health (nominated by Shuk-mei Ho, PhD), who received the Research Service Award.
• Arnold Schwartz, PhD, a distinguished professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Health and Diseases, and James Herman, PhD, a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience, with the Distinguished Research Professor and Lifetime Achievement Award. 
• Gregory Fermann, MD, professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, who received the Clinical Trialist of the Year award. 

Additionally, 25 faculty members who were named to the Gallery of Awardees were recognized during the celebration. The Gallery of Awardees identifies and congratulates faculty who received grants totaling $100,000 in direct and indirect costs per year.
