College of Nursing PhD Program Presents 2017 Health Policy Series
The University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Nursing presents the 2017 Health Policy Speaker Series, featuring speakers in February and March. The events will be held in Procter Hall on Monday, Feb. 6, Monday, Feb. 20 and Monday, March 20.
The first event features two speakers from the Ohio Nurses Association (ONA), Tiffany Bukoffsky and Brian Burger. Bukoffsky is the ONA director of health policy and nursing practice while Burger is an ONA legislative ambassador, in addition to being an adjunct instructor in the College of Nursing.
The second event on Feb. 20 features Marilyn Crumpton, MD, the interim health commissioner for the Cincinnati Health Department. She is a pediatrician who has served as the medical director for the Division of School and Adolescent Health within the Cincinnati Health Department and medical director for Growing Well, a collaborative to improve health and wellness services in Cincinnati.
The third and final event will be on Monday, March 20, featuring Ohio State Senator Cecil Thomas who serves Ohios 9th District. Senator Thomas serves on several committees, including the subcommittee on higher education.
Jean Anthony, PhD, professor of clinical and Donna Shambley-Ebron, PhD, associate professor and PhD program director in the College of Nursing, have presented the Health Policy Speaker Series since 2010. "I started teaching the health policy course for the doctoral students and found out they really dont understand policy making and were very uncomfortable when we talked about interacting with legislators, Anthony says.
In an effort to change that, she invited local leaders to talk about the impact health care professionals can have related to health policy making. Anthony says nurses are the perfect audience for that message.
"Its important because nurses know health care, Anthony says. "Theyre trusted, they know consumers, they know patients, so theyre advocates for patients and for their peers.
All three sessions will be held at Procter Hall. Register here.
