PRP Symposium Speaker to Address Workplace Violence Prevention Oct. 5

The 18th annual Pilot Research Project (PRP) Symposium highlights research in occupational and environmental health and related disciplines and is presented by the UC Education and Research Center (ERC). This year’s symposium will be held Oct. 5-6, featuring keynote speaker Carri Casteel, PhD, associate professor in Occupational and Environmental Health Department in the College of Public Health at the University of Iowa. Casteel will present "Public Health Approach to Workplace Violence Prevention in Small Businesses.”

A panel discussion addressing a variety of occupational health and safety topics will conclude the symposium on Friday. This year’s special guests include UC President Neville Pinto, providing welcoming remarks and a representative from Senator Sherrod Brown’s office reading a letter on his behalf. 

The symposium is a showcase of the Pilot Research Training Program, which serves to increase the capacity of research trainees and young investigators in occupational health and safety fields. It will be held at the Kresge Auditorium in the Medical Sciences Building from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, and 8 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 6.

This year is also the ERC’s 40th anniversary, and to celebrate the symposium, an awards ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. Thursday, honoring individuals who have made a significant impact in worker health and safety.

This symposium is intended for: occupational medicine experts, occupational nurses, safety engineers, environmental and occupational health specialists, public health professionals, industrial hygienists, researchers in environmental exposures, air pollution, bio aerosol, and sensor engineering experts. Graduate students and post-doctoral students in the above and related fields are encouraged to attend. The PRP Training Program supports pilot research projects in the area of occupational health and safety for 12 institutions from Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

The symposium is free and open to the public. The registration deadline is Oct. 4.
