Emergency Medicine Faculty Wins Research Presentation Award

Justin Benoit, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, received a research presentation award during the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) annual meeting held recently in San Diego.

Benoit received the NAEMSP award for Best Cardiac Arrest Research Presentation for his abstract titled "Timing of Advanced Airway Placement After Out-of-Hospital Arrest: Earlier Is Better.”

"Endotracheal tubes and supraglottic airways are frequently placed by EMS to treat sudden cardiac arrest, but the optimal timing of this procedure is unknown and unspecified by current cardiac arrest guidelines,” says Benoit. "Our study demonstrated that early airway placement is associated with an increased probability of return of spontaneous circulation and a decreased time to return of spontaneous circulation.”

The research was also presented at the American Heart Association (AHA) meeting in November 2017 in Anaheim, California where it won a "Young Investigator Award.” An abstract of the study appeared in Circulation, a journal of the AHA.
