UC Hosts 7th Annual Internal Medicine Research Symposium

The University of Cincinnati (UC) Department of Internal Medicine in the College of Medicine is hosting its seventh annual research symposium Friday, April 13, 2018, in the CARE/Crawley Atrium, 3235 Eden Ave. This year’s annual research symposium is part of UC’s Research and Innovation Week with the theme "Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure for Enhanced Well-Being and Livelihoods.”

"Each year we like to gather faculty and staff to re-invigorate our commitment to our research mission,” says Carl Fichtenbaum, MD, associate chair of translational research and professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases. "Our annual symposium is a time to celebrate our successes and identify new avenues for research. This year we will focus on collaborative research and how we can impact our community. We will hear presentations on successes in our transplant program and rare lung diseases program.”

During the past six years, internal medicine has encouraged and supported research through a program titled, RISE UC or Research Initiative Supporting Excellence at UC, says Fichtenbaum, also a physician at UC Health. "We will have a panel of leaders at UC, UC Health and the community discussing our plans to advance the science and support the research mission. We will also celebrate our trainees with our annual poster competition along with a new image gallery competition. We encourage faculty and staff to participate in this annual event to help us continue to build a positive research culture in the Department of Internal Medicine.”

The Department of Internal Medicine comprises nine divisions with more than 280 faculty as clinicians, scientists, and investigators. It is the largest unit of full-time geographic faculty in the College of Medicine and is responsible for $80.9 million in research funding, including $13.1 million in new awards during the 2017 fiscal year.

A trainees’ round table with Maura Gillison, MD, PhD, will launch the symposium on the morning of Friday, April 13, in Room E-351 in the Medical Sciences Building. Trisha Wiser-Draper, MD, PhD, assistant professor in the Division of Hematology Oncology and medical director of the UC Cancer Institute Clinical Trials office, will facilitate the round-table discussion. Meanwhile, Gillison, professor in the Department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology, Division of Cancer Medicine, at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, will also give a keynote address for the symposium later during the day.

Submissions for the Image Competition and Gallery are welcomed from all faculty, staff and students in the College of Medicine and due by Friday, March 16. Categories for submission include basic research and clinical research—either can have microscopy, inflorescence, biopsies, etc.—along with images in medicine showcasing subjects related to the College of Medicine such as MSB or CARE/Crawley architecture, medical personnel in action or other topics.

Images will be on display throughout Research and Innovation Week in the CARE/Crawley Atrium, beginning with an opening reception and judging on Monday, April 9, from noon to 2 p.m. For a submission form, please contact Emily Dobbs at dobbsek@uc.edu

Fichtenbaum will offer a welcome at the event with remarks presented by Rita Alloway, PharmD, research professor of medicine and Director of Transplant Clinical Research, and Frank McCormack, MD, Gordon and Helen Hughes Taylor Professor and Director of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine.
