Emmy award-winning producer/director Joe Brackman joins CCM E-Media’s faculty
Brackman will teach classes in sports media production and produce coverage of UC Athletic events
UC College-Conservatory of Music Dean Stanley E. Romanstein has announced the addition of Joe Brackman to the college’s roster of distinguished performing and media arts faculty members. A nine-time Emmy Award-winning producer and director, Brackman will teach sports media production classes through CCM’s Division of E-Media. His appointment as Assistant Professor of Multi-Camera Production begins on July 1, 2020.
Brackman’s hire is the result of a new initiative developed by Romanstein, E-Media Division Head Kevin Burke and E-Media Professor John Owens, which connects CCM faculty, staff and students with UC Athletics. Beginning this fall, CCM E-Media will offer experience-based classes in sports media production and also produce live multi-camera coverage of UC Athletic events for the new ESPN+ subscription-based streaming service. The courses led by Brackman are part of E-Media’s track-based curriculum in Film and Television Production, Broadcast Media Production and Multimedia Production.
The opportunity for CCM’s E-Media majors, and students in our minor, to produce content that is delivered via an ESPN network will look great on their resumes and boost the quality of their digital portfolios.
“By integrating this initiative into our curriculum, we are creating valuable learning opportunities for our students in the expanding field of sports media production,” says E-Media Division Head Kevin Burke. “This field overlaps with other areas in our program, such as documentary production, on-camera talent development, cinematography, editing, audio and, of course, producing and directing. It also connects with our student media organization, Bearcast. The opportunity for CCM’s E-Media majors, and students in our minor, to produce content that is delivered via an ESPN network will look great on their resumes and boost the quality of their digital portfolios.” The American Athletic Conference and ESPN agreed to a media rights extension in 2019, which mandated the production of a wide range of AAC sporting events for ESPN+.
Brackman joins CCM from WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio, where he produced the award-winning coach’s show for Ohio State University football – “GameTime with Urban Meyer” and “GameTime with Ryan Day” – along with the program “Inside Ohio State Athletics” for WBNS and the FoxSports Ohio network. An award-winning producer and director, Brackman has also served as the General Manager for AggieVision at New Mexico State University, where he recruited, trained and mentored students in the production of live NMSU sports telecasts for regional sports networks for FoxSports Arizona and ESPN3. Brackman has both an undergraduate degree in Communication and a Master of Business Administration degree from Ohio University.
“I want to thank UC Athletics for partnering with CCM to provide our E-Media students with the kinds of hands-on experiences that will allow them to graduate with a competitive advantage in the workforce,” said Romanstein. “I also want to thank the search committee chaired by Kevin Burke, which included CCM faculty members Donald Hancock, John Hebbeler, Hagit Limor and John Owens, along with Bill Frigge from Athletics. Joe Brackman is a true leader in the field of sports media production and our students will benefit from his expertise.”
