US News and World Report: Tips on How to Recognize and Treat a Nervous Breakdown

UC psychiatry professor offers tips for coping with stressful situations

Several mental health experts spoke with US News and World Report about dealing with episodes of overwhelming stress.  These have commonly been referred to as a 'nervous breakdown.' 

Maria Espinola, PsyD, assistant professor in the UC College of Medicine, and others discuss what separates a nervous breakdown from an otherwise difficult time in your life is how well you can keep your emotions in check. Feelings that you would normally be able to manage can erupt. “During a nervous breakdown, fear can turn into terror, sadness into despair and hopelessness, and anger into rage and fury,” Espinola says.
