Inside Higher Ed: Dissertation assistance during COVID-19
Writing is required to succeed in and eventually leave graduate school
In a first-person account in the academic publication Inside Higher Ed, Laura Micciche, University of Cincinnati professor of English, describes the positive aspects of teaching her two-week dissertation writing workshop online. It was the first time the course had gone virtual since Micciche began teaching it in 2013.
"After spending two weeks with this group, I became convinced of the benefits of a remote writing workshop for advanced students who need community, structure and time management more than conventional writing instruction," says Micciche.
Despite COVID-19, 30 students (the maximum number) enrolled and subsequently the majority of students extolled the ease and flexibly of the online approach, to include the community support aspect. Micciche also provides tips for transitioning to an online format.
