Derek Zipkin spent his first day of clinical shadowing in Africa facing a mother who had just learned that her 6-year-old daughter contracted HIV through a blood transfusion. "I can see their faces clearly, says Zipkin, a second-year medical student in the UC College of Medicine. "The mother crying hysterically and the child, not knowing why her mom is crying, going over to comfort her mother when her mother found out she has HIV, says Zipkin.

New UC Sensor Promises Rapid Detection of Dangerous Heavy Metal...

UC researchers have developed the first lab-on-a-chip sensor to provide fast feedback regarding levels of the heavy metal manganese in humans. The sensor is both  environmentally and child friendly, and will first be field tested in Marietta, Ohio, where a UC researcher is leading a long-term health study on the potential health effects of heavy metals.

A UC-grown research idea and the mentorship of respected senior faculty helped hematology oncology fellow Shaalan Beg, MD, land a spot in the 2011 Methods in Clinical Cancer Research Workshop, a highly selective training program sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Association for Cancer Research.
