UC engineer explores more efficient propulsion for aircraft

University of Cincinnati aerospace engineering doctoral student Saugat Ghimire was fascinated by planes his entire life. At UC, he has been involved in teaching and research, on-campus activities such as serving as the president of the Nepalese Student Association and the vice president of the Aerospace Engineering Graduate Student Government. He was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers celebrates 50 years

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) has been uplifting and empowering Hispanic Engineers nationwide for the last 50 years. The SHPE chapter at the University of Cincinnati is one of nearly 300 university chapters in the U.S. Founded in 1973 by a Hispanic civil engineer working in Los Angeles, SHPE was created to increase professional support for Hispanic engineers and provide a sense of community in an area where representation is lacking.

UC engineering student helped start new lab

Ten years ago, Eleanor Scott came to the University of Cincinnati to pursue a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and gain real-world engineering experience through UC's cooperative education program. In the beginning of her master's program, she began working with Dr. Sarah Watzman, who was in the process of setting up a new lab. After working in the lab for several months, Scott decided to remain at UC for her doctoral degree in materials science. Her PhD research focuses on magneto-thermoelectric characterization of Weyl semimetals. She was recently accepted into the Department of Energy's Science Graduate Student Research Program and was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Construction management alumna honored for impact in her field

Gloria Samuel entered the construction industry more than 20 years ago as a University of Cincinnati co-op student and never looked back. Since then, she has earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees at UC and has taken great pride in giving back to the college by sharing her education and experiences with others as an adjunct faculty and serving on numerous community boards and committees. Currently, she is the Senior Vice President and Director of Construction Program and Project Management for Fifth Third Bank.

UC engineering student works to advance ultrasound technology

Elmira Ghahramani, a biomedical engineering PhD student at the University of Cincinnati, first found an interest in medical imaging during her undergraduate studies in Tehran, Iran. Her research aims to address limitations and enhance the efficacy of ultrasound imaging, specifically as it applies to liver tumor thermal ablation. She collaborates with professionals from Cincinnati Children's Hospital and was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month from the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

UC engineering student works to improve speech science technology

Speech is one of the most complex tasks many people perform in their daily lives. University of Cincinnati graduate student, Sarah Li, is applying principles of biomedical engineering to the study of speech. She has received several awards for this research and was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month from UC's College of Engineering and Applied Science.

UC engineering professor awarded $2M NIH grant

Leyla Esfandiari, an associate professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Cincinnati, has received $2 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) to fund her research on small extracellular vesicles (exosomes) and the role they play in nerve regeneration as treatment for nerve injuries or other neurodegenerative diseases.

Alaska Airlines hires its first UC engineering co-op student

For University of Cincinnati aerospace engineering student Madison Byrd, her final co-op rotation was noteworthy for more than one reason. Byrd's co-op with Alaska Airlines marked both her final rotation as an undergraduate student and the first UC student to work for the West Coast airline.

UC engineer designs robots to fix satellites

The path to higher education looks different for every student. For doctoral student Andrew Barth, the inspiration to pursue a Ph.D. came after fifteen years in the aerospace engineering industry. While at the University of Cincinnati, Barth has been involved in several professional conferences, high school and undergraduate outreach programs, and was recently named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by the College of Engineering and Applied Science.
