About the Books

Books: From the Temple of Zeus to the Hyperloop: University of Cincinnati Stories and In Service to the City

From the Temple of Zeus to the Hyperloop: University of Cincinnati Stories, edited by Greg Hand, reflects the breadth and diversity of the University of Cincinnati over its rich and eventful history. This book of essays (and a poem and a play), by over 30 contributors, commemorates the UC Bicentennial by offering personal insights into the hundreds of thousands of outstanding individuals who participated in the university’s transformative and inspiring story, encompassing 200 years of education, opportunity, inquiry, collaboration, innovation, community service and impact.

In Service to the City: A History of the University of Cincinnati, by David Stradling, is the first scholarly history of UC to appear in over fifty years.  Written as part of the bicentennial celebration, the book offers a comprehensive but non-encyclopedic history exploring the evolving relationship between the university and the city. While focusing on the university’s relationship to Cincinnati, the book also explores UC’s responses to changes in to national economic and cultural shifts, as well as broad trends in American higher education.
