CCM Prep offers fall 2020 arts classes for youth, teens and adults

Register now for CCM Preparatory programs in music, dance, theatre arts and cinematic and media arts

Arts enthusiasts of all ages and abilities are invited to register now for music, dance and theatre arts programs offered through CCM Preparatory and Community Engagement. Classes are offered online this semester unless otherwise noted.

CCM Prep provides enjoyable and accessible arts opportunities within a highly creative environment that educate and inspire the whole student. Courses are taught by CCM Prep and collegiate faculty members and guest artists. 

New in fall 2020: students interested in being behind the camera can explore CCM Prep's Cinematic and Media Arts program, which is partnered with the college's award-winning Electronic Media division. Faculty will teach the basics of camera work, lighting, editing and sound so students can learn the foundations of filmmaking.

CCM Prep offers private instruction to students of all ages in multiple subjects, including acting, dance, voice and lessons in a variety of music instruments. The fall semester consists of 15 lessons. Continuing students will be invoiced and will receive an email regarding their registration. New students should complete an inquiry through CCM Prep's online registration website. 

CCM Prep offers music theory classes for youth (ages 8 and above) and adults, as well as music theory classes for ensemble musicians. Classes include aural recognition, sight singing, written theory and access to CCM technology labs. A theory test determines proper class placement.

stARTS

Students will twirl on their toes, march to the drum and perform with puppets!        Welcome to stARTS, our unique introduction to CCM and the performing arts. Each week a picture book will come to life as our youngest stars sing, move and explore the characters, action and themes of the book through creative play.


stAGES

  • Age group: 5-6 years old
  • Dates: Sept. 19-Nov. 21, 2020
  • Tuition: $150

It stARTS with a beat, a movement or a word, and suddenly you’re singing, dancing and acting on stAGES! In this exciting multi-arts class, our young stars will be introduced to the world of the stage, both in front and behind-the-scenes! stAGES sparks creativity and imagination as students focus on the skills of an actor, dancer and musician. Storytelling, creative and rhythmic movement, songs and percussion jams are part of each class.


Primary Ballet

Very young dancers have fun in this creative introductory dance class learning basic ballet movements and terminology. Class activities include movement exploration, creative movement, moving in groups, improvisation and working with props. Primary Ballet invites students into the magical enchantment of classical ballet. It presents ballet as a fun and creative learning experience, but is structured enough so that students begin to learn ballet technique through body awareness and are able to recall movement from memory. This class is offered online or in person.


Group Piano for Ages 5 and up

  • Age group: 5-8 years old
  • Dates: Aug. 22-Nov. 21, 2020
  • Tuition: $250
  • Instructors: Andrew Millar

This class will introduce curious young musicians to the piano and basic keyboard skills necessary to play the instrument. Additionally, students will develop musicianship skills of listening, music vocabulary and note reading. We recommend participation in this program for one or two years before individual piano study for students in this age range. All materials will be digitally accessed; no book or music purchases required. A parent or guardian is expected to attend each week with the student.


CCM Action!

  • Age group: 7-9 years old

Young artists take to the stage! In this class, students will use their imaginations to explore the basic principles and skills of acting. They will think on their feet using improvisation skills. Students will learn how to perform individually in front of an audience of their peers as well as work with an ensemble to perform.


Mini Musical Theatre Intensive

  • Age group: 7-9 years old
  • Dates: Sept. 19-Nov. 21, 2020
  • Tuition: $150
  • Instructor: Karie Lee Sutherland

Provides an engaging and easily accessible introduction to the concepts and skills of Musical Theatre for younger students ages 7-9. Students will explore techniques of voice, acting and dance, as well as guidelines for audition preparation while working towards a mini-scale version of a musical production. No audition required.


Acting Beginning, Advanced and Intermediate Classes

With a focus on creating and building collaborative young artists, classes work with all aspects of acting. From various audition prep and techniques, improv games and application, monologue and scene work, to script mining and character development, our acting classes prepare the actor for the entire process. Classes work to create empathetic, strong, prepared and confident young actors.

Actors gain experience working on-camera and with others and gain the knowledge to conquer the individual work that goes into a theatrical performance. The joy of acting is nurtured by our long-standing faculty of working professionals, in film, on stage, in directing, producing, playwriting, stage combat, theatre movement and more. The Acting faculty team has decades of experience in inspiring young actors to learn, improve and pursue their craft of acting.

All classes require audition or approval by instructor. New students must audition for placement within the Intermediate/Advanced class.


Ballet

  • Age group: 7-13 years old

Open ballet class for returning and new students! The philosophy of CCM Prep’s ballet program is that every student deserves careful and individualized training from qualified instructors. Classes are small and instructors and specially trained to teach appropriate ages and skill levels. Classes require students to audition for placement within the program. These classes are offered both online and in person.


Starling Preparatory String Project

  • Age group: 7-18 years old
  • Dates: Aug. 22-Nov. 21, 2020
  • Tuition: $2,475
  • Instructor: Kurt Sassmannshaus

The Cincinnati Starling Project is a specialized educational program for talented young string players. Our mission is to pass on the rich tradition of classical music to the next generation of performers and audiences by training exceptional students. In addition to private lessons, students participate in a comprehensive program that includes chamber music and music theory. We will not offer Starling Chamber Orchestra or live chamber music in the fall.


Cincinnati Junior Strings

  • Age group: Students in grades 5-9
  • Auditions: Sept. 12 and 13, 2020
  • Dates: Sept. 20-Nov. 22, 2020
  • Tuition: $170 per semester
  • Instructor: Rachel Bierkan

Cincinnati Junior Strings (CJS) is a high-achieving, performing orchestra designed to augment area private studios and public school string programs in training young players. CJS has made several international performing tours of Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Canada, China and Hong Kong.

Auditions are required. Auditions for CJS will be held virtually in real time on Saturday, Sept. 12 and Sunday, Sept. 13.  A link for your audition time will be sent to you 24-48 hours before your audition.


Cinematic and Media Arts

  • Age group: 10-15 years old
  • Dates: Sept. 19-Nov. 21, 2020
  • Tuition: $275
  • Instructor: Bradley Thompson

Are you excited to be behind the camera instead of in front of it? Are you more interested in how films are created than acting? If so, we have what you want in our new Cinematic and Media Arts program. Partnering with CCM's nationally recognized Electronic Media program, faculty will teach the basics of camera work, lighting, editing and sound that form the foundation of filmmaking. Classes include guest lectures and workshops from CCM faculty and professional filmmakers. As students progress in the class, possible collaborations will continue with students in the Theatre Arts program to create short dramatic films that are staged for the camera. Requirement: a smartphone with camera, or any camera that shoots video. 


Junior Musical Theatre Intensive

Junior Musical Theatre Intensive (Jr. MTI) provides a challenging and disciplined educational experience for students ages 9-14 who have a special interest in musical theatre. The students receive instruction in audition preparation, vocal music, dance and performance technique. For the fall semester, students will work online towards a virtual performance entitled “We Tell the Story." Auditions are not required for the Fall Semester. 


Acting Certificate I and II

The Acting Certificate program is designed to hone the actor’s craft by developing skills and processes essential for work on stage and in front of the camera. Topics studied include Shakespeare, characterization, movement, vocal technique, improvisation, scene work and Meisner Technique. Students in the second year of the program will each create a video for an end of the year showcase. Please note that registration in this class is a full academic year commitment. The invoice will be split into Fall and Spring semester invoices this year due to pandemic guidelines.   


Ballet

  • Experience level: Intermediate levels 5 and up
  • Dates: Aug. 22-Nov. 21, 2020

Open ballet class for returning students, new placements and company auditions. To audition for ballet companies, students must be enrolled in our leveled ballet classes. This class requires all students to audition for acceptance into the program. These classes are offered both online and in person.


Dance Styles

Open dance class for Dance Styles placement. Dance Styles is designed for the musical theatre and acting students. Students will work in tap, musical theatre dance, fundamentals and/or street styles. This class requires all students to audition for placement within the program. This class will alternate between in person and virtual.


Music Theory for College Prep

  • Age group: Students in grades 9-12
  • Dates: Sept. 20-Nov. 22, 2020
  • Tuition: $155/10-week session
  • Instructor: Martin Hebel

Now is the time to begin preparing for your college music theory placement test and build the necessary foundation to succeed in undergraduate music theory classes. This 10-week session is designed to introduce the basic rudiments of music theory, including:

  • Pitch reading in all common clefs
  • Intervals and Scales
  • Triads and Seventh Chords
  • Roman numeral Analysis and Figured Bass Symbols

Ballet

  • Age group: 18 and up
  • Dates: Aug. 22-Nov. 21, 2020
  • Tuition and instructor: Details vary by level

The philosophy of the ballet program is that every student deserves careful and individualized training from qualified instructors. A variety of levels from beginning to intermediate to company are available for our adult students. These classes are offered both online and in person.


New Horizons Orchestra

  • Age group: Ages 50 and up
  • Dates: Sept. 19-Nov. 21, 2020
  • Tuition: $150 per semester
  • Instructor: Betty Anne Gottlieb

New Horizons Music programs provide entry points to music-making for people over age 50, including those with no musical experience at all and adults who were active in school music programs, but have been inactive for a long period.

CCM Prep's New Horizons Orchestra offers ensemble instruction under the direction of experienced teacher Betty Anne Gottlieb. You’ll find music making is great for mental and social stimulation, physical fitness, releasing stress and stimulating your creativity.
