Backstage Magazine: CCM gives students tools to succeed on stage and screen

Backstage Magazine is spotlighting the best acting and musical theatre programs in the U.S. and beyond with its Reaching Higher series. The magazine recently showcased UC College-Conservatory of Music theatre arts in a questionnaire with Denton Yockey, division head of Theatre Arts, Production and Arts Administration (TAPAA) at CCM.

Few schools offer more comprehensive training programs for actors, singers, dancers, directors, designers, technicians, and arts managers than the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Students enrolled in CCM’s BFA programs in acting and musical theater receive a wealth of learning opportunities focused on performing onstage as well as some behind-the-scenes work.

TAPAA offers undergraduate or graduate instruction in Acting, Arts Administration, Dance, Musical Theatre, Opera, and Theatre Design and Production. Students are exposed to a variety of learning opportunities, thanks not only to the sharing of resources among all the programs within the division, but also through interaction with other divisions at CCM.

Backstage Magazine's Reaching Higher series dives into college performing arts programs (specifically acting and musical theatre programs) to help incoming students find their right fit and prepare for auditions at their school of choice. 

"Students should seek a school that is the right fit for them," Yockey says. "They should ask themselves if they see themselves excelling in that program's system and with that program's faculty and fellow students. They should investigate their top choices, talk to faculty and current students and schedule an in-person or virtual visit. Due to the pandemic, CCM is currently hosting virtual visits only, which can be scheduled online."

Few schools offer more comprehensive training programs for opera singers, coaches, directors, musical theatre performers, actors, designers, technicians and arts managers than CCM. Utilizing a superb faculty of professional artist-teachers, CCM’s programs in opera, musical theatre, drama, dance, arts administration and theatre design and production attract remarkably talented students from around the world.

Students in the Division of TAPAA have the opportunity to participate in a wide-ranging scope of degree programs, classes, major productions, studio productions, master classes, summer projects and professional internships.

Students are exposed to a wealth of learning opportunities, thanks not only to the sharing of resources among all the programs within the division, but also through interaction with other divisions at CCM.
