First Look: CCMONSTAGE Play Series presents 'Blue Stockings'
Watch CCM Acting students on stage in 'Blue Stockings' presented Feb. 10-13, 2022.
UC’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) continues its CCMONSTAGE Play Series with Blue Stockings, running Feb. 10-13, 2022 in Patricia Corbett Theater. Jessica Swale's play shares a moving story of four young women fighting for education and self-determination against the backdrop of women’s suffrage in 1896 Britain.
Set in 1896 at England’s Girton College Cambridge, the first school open to female university students, the audience is met with four girls: Tess, Maeve, Celia and Carolyn, who made the courageous decision to pursue education in the Victorian period. They are ‘blue stockings’ - unnatural, educated women, stemming from different backgrounds but brought together by the determination to fight for their right to graduate.
Through strife and misogyny in the classroom, newfound love interests and troubles back home, they overcome these challenges to fight for womens' equal rights.
“The thing I enjoy most about this play is that higher education and knowledge are seen as an adventure," says CCM Acting Professor and Director Susan Felder. "Even riding a bicycle is a radical for women. Our heroines are courageous and resilient. The play is told with playfulness and hard-hitting truths.”
The 2021-22 CCMONSTAGE Play Series presents Blue Stockings Feb. 10-13, 2022 at Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office; student discounts are available.
