WVXU: UC study delves into the effectiveness of police de-escalation training
Researchers at the highly ranked School of Criminal Justice find benefits to enhanced police trainin
In an interview with WVXU’s Cincinnati Edition, Professor Robin Engel and Associate Professor Nick Corsaro, both in UC’s School of Criminal Justice, discuss the results of police de-escalation training that took place in collaboration with the Louisville, Kentucky, Metro Police Department.
In addition to other findings, the results were that a specific training was associated with 28% fewer use-of-force incidents, 26% fewer injuries to community members and 36% fewer injuries to police officers.
The study appears in the American Society of Criminology’s flagship journal Criminology & Public Policy.

In 2025 the Ohio Reach Postsecondary designation was awarded to UC's College of Education, Criminal Justice, Human Services, and Information Technology (CECH) as part of the program's third cohort.
