The Register: Reduce Your Risk Health Fair upcoming in Crosby Township

UC expert discusses importance of screening, concern over uranium and radiation exposure

Health care workers will be on hand to provide screenings and information about a variety of health issues at the upcoming Reduce Your Risk Health Fair in Crosby Township.

Susan Pinney, PhD, told The Register one reason the fair is occurring is due to concern over the link between uranium and radiation exposure and cancer risk.

Pinney works with the Fernald Community Cohort, which consists of the 9,782 people who participated in the Fernald Medical Monitoring Program from 1990-2008. The program was an 18-year medical surveillance program for community residents living near the former U.S. Department of Energy uranium processing site at Fernald, in Crosby Township.

"There is still a concern that uranium and radiation exposure may increase the risk of cancer,” said Pinney, associate director for Cancer Prevention, Control and Population Science Research at the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center, director of the Center for Environmental Genetics and professor in the Department of Environmental and Public Health Sciences in UC's College of Medicine.

The fair will include information and experts to discuss health issues including heart disease and how over-the-counter medications can interact with prescription medications, as well as blood pressure screenings, oxygen reading, cancer risk counseling and urine screening on-site.
