"Cinderella" transforms CCM stage into storybook wonderland March 2-5

Prepare to be enchanted by this timeless fairy tale; families invited to character photo op March 4

Story by CCM Graduate Student Chet Rhodes

Join the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music for an absolutely magical production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical Cinderella on March 2-5, 2023, in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets are available through the CCM Box Office.

Audiences of all ages are sure to find themselves spellbound by this classic tale, as told in Douglas Carter Beane’s new book. Reimagined for the 21st century, this unique performance includes exciting twists to the familiar story, with some unexpected surprises along the way. More than just a story about a poor servant girl saved by magic and true love, CCM’s production sees Cinderella finding her voice and taking a stand, ushering in change not only for herself, but for the whole kingdom. A true heroine, the Cinderella of this story is sure to inspire and motivate all, teaching us to not just dream, but to act.

Originally written for TV, the 1957 Rodgers and Hammerstein version stared Julie Andrews in the title role, and was met with groundbreaking success. Beane later adapted the show for stage, and it first opened on Broadway in 2013. Producing such a renowned musical requires streamlined precision, organic collaboration and professional-level talent both on- and off-stage. Eric Byrd, Director of Cinderella and CCM Instructor of Musical Theatre, spoke on CCM students’ success in meeting these demands:

“The magical transformations have created practical challenges for our designers and technicians, as they all must be executed right in front of the audience’s eyes,” he says, “pulling off these moments takes collaboration between multiple departments, trouble shooting and precise timing.” As all of the students’ hard work comes together, this show truly feels enchanted.

The production features lush music brilliantly played by student musicians and led by CCM Instructor of Musical Theatre Ian Axness, impressive creations and designs by CCM Theatre Design and Production students, as well as energetic performances by CCM Musical Theatre students. The college also welcomes NYC-based guest artist Brandon Kelly as the choreographer for Cinderella.
