Budding researchers present at the Undergraduate Scholarly Showcase

Event just one way UC supports students who are interested in research

More than 460 undergraduate students in more than 25 disciplines and seven colleges across the University of Cincinnati presented research projects or scholarly work at the annual Undergraduate Scholarly Showcase in the Tangeman University Center on Thursday, April 20, and online from April 14-23, 2023.

The Showcase provides valuable practical experience and professional development for students who may conduct and present research in a future career in academia or industry. A major thrust of the Showcase – and of the coaching presenters receive – is learning to present one’s research in a way that’s understandable and interesting to people outside their discipline.

In all, 465 students delivered 309 presentations. About 370 students presented a research poster, while another 70 created a five-minute, narrated video. Twenty-three students delivered an eight-minute mini lecture. Seven students delivered a summary of their capstone project in just three minutes to a live online audience in the Capstone Competition.

The annual event is just one facet of the University of Cincinnati’s Undergraduate Research Program, which helps students access research experiences, advance as research professionals and celebrate their achievements.

Program director MK Lamkin, PhD, and her small team provide instructive videos, introductory sessions, a summer learning series, a one-credit course and advice on how to get research experience. They also pair undergraduate students with graduate students to talk about research.

At this year’s Showcase, 74 professors, graduate students and postdocs were recognized for excellence in research mentorship. In nominating them, undergraduates expressed how much they appreciate and admire their research mentors for welcoming, encouraging, teaching and motivating them.

The next Showcase will take place in April 2024. Registration for student presenters will open in January.
