Business Courier: UC to add research space to Digital Futures

Construction on Phase 2 to begin later this year

The University of Cincinnati will begin construction later this year to complete UC Digital Futures, a facility for interdisciplinary research, the Cincinnati Business Courier reported.

UC celebrated the grand opening of Digital Futures in September 2022. The six-story building, which is located in the Cincinnati Innovation District, is home to more than 20 interdisciplinary research labs.

When Digital Futures opened, some spaces in the building remained unfinished, including the entirety of the fourth and fifth floors. Construction will start in December to complete the building, with construction slated to be finished by December 2024.

“Approval of Phase 2 of Digital Futures demonstrates UC’s commitment to growing our applied research capabilities,” UC Vice President of Research Patrick Limbach told the Business Courier. “These enhancements will provide additional resources for conducting research vital to national security, aligned with our goal to be a leader in Digital Health, and will expand our ability to support backbone organizations key to the vibrancy of our city.”

The construction will create new research space. The entire fifth floor will be occupied by the College of Engineering and Applied Science, and the fourth floor will include a room built to the standards outlined in the U.S. government's International Traffic in Arms Regulations, which govern munitions as well as military technical data and software.

“There are some partners on the research side that faculty are already working with that do propriety or restricted-access research that we're building with them in mind,” Limbach said. “But we would also be looking to expand the research partnerships of the faculty that are working in those areas.”
