WVXU: Congressman Brad Wenstrup on why he's not seeking reelection

UC political scientist David Niven gives political commentary to WVXU

Ohio Congressman Brad Wenstrup (R) has announced he will not be seeking another term in Ohio’s 2nd Congressional District.

Following an interview with Wenstrup, Cincinnati Edition host Lucy May spoke with UC political scientist David Niven and political reporter Scott Wartman about the soon to be open congressional seat and the candidates.

Currently there are 12 Republicans and 2 Democrats who have announced their candidacy in the large district comprised of 15 counties.

“This district is just a fantastic base for republicans,” says Niven, an associate professor in UC’s School of Public and International Affairs.

The 2nd district consists of 15 counties with rural areas, industrial areas and some wealthy suburban areas in Clermont County.

Whomever wins the post could likely hold it for a very long time, says Niven, pointing to the cohesiveness of voting blocs here.

Niven teaches American politics and conducts research on campaigns, political communication and death penalty policy.
