CCM Winds presents annual PRISM concert

The performance includes CCM Chamber Winds, CYWE and student-organized groups

Story by CCM Graduate Student Chet Rhodes

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Wind Studies is ecstatic to announce the return of its annual PRISM concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, 2024, in Corbett Auditorium. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office

An annual celebration of Winds excellence, this concert has happened every year since 1997. Following the crowd-pleasing "PRISM" style, the fast-paced program is jam packed with numerous ensembles performing back-to-back throughout CCM’s Corbett Auditorium, not even pausing for applause until the very end.

“It is exciting!” exclaims Graduate Conducting Associate Patty Saunders. “Inspired by the idea of refracting light that a prism creates in many directions and colors, the music will be performed from a variety of spaces within Corbett Auditorium and showcase a display of aural colors through diverse ensemble combinations. Along with the musical performance, a CCM student lighting designer adds a visual layer to the soundscape.”

The most popular Winds Studies event of the season, PRISM features numerous ensembles from throughout the college, including the CCM Wind Ensemble, Chamber Winds, Brass Choir, CCM Youth Wind Ensemble (CYWE) and more! Small, student-led groups range from woodwind duos and trios to a tuba quartet and saxophone ensemble, ensuring that all aspects of wind playing are featured in this exciting program.

With concert pieces drawn from some of the most influential composers in the winds repertoire, this celebratory concert is sure to be memorable! Selections include John Phillip Sousa’s The Liberty Bell, Petite Symphony by Charles Gounod, Omar Thomas’ Come Sunday, and many, many more!

“The hours of rehearsal that go into the programmed repertoire is incredible,” Saunders says, “as each ensemble rehearses independently throughout the semester. The end product of this program is a result of a truly collaborative spirit among the student performers and conductors that produces a highly energetic and engaging non-stop program for the audience.”
