Travel the world with the CCM Steel Drum Band in April 12 concert
The performance features music from Venezuela, Cuba and more
Story by CCM Graduate Assistant Lucy Evans
The CCM Steel Drum Band and Afro-Carribbean Music Ensemble present a joint concert, World Music, on Saturday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Corbett Auditorium. The program features selections from the Caribbean, South America, and more, as well as several student arrangements. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office.
The national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, the steel drum’s iconic timbre is a staple of Calypso music. However, the concert features many instruments throughout the evening—with ensemble members playing conga drums, shekeres (beaded gourds), maracas, and even using their voices to round out the sound.
This year, the program focuses on Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Venezuelan music, with selections that highlight the exuberant street music of Venezuela’s San Juan festivals. Unlike many CCM concerts, audiences are encouraged to sing and clap along with several selections!
