The global beauty impact on the EU's microplastics regulation

UC cosmetic science expert featured in BeautyMatter article

The University of Cincinnati's Kelly Dobos was featured in a BeautyMatter article discussing how European Union regulations on microplastics in cosmetic products are affecting the industry worldwide.

In September 2023, the EU restricted intentionally adding microplastics in new products, with a series of deadlines to phase out microplastics in current formulations. Rinse-off cosmetic products need to be microplastic-free by October 2027, leave-on cosmetics and fragrance encapsulates by October 2029 and makeup, lip and nail cosmetic products by October 2035.

The EU has typically been seen as the standard-setter for cosmetics around the world, but experts say fewer other countries are following its lead on microplastics. Dobos said the industry and cosmetic science experts need to be actively involved in regulatory discussions and implementation.

“Regulations shape the products we create and the technologies we invest in, so having a seat at the table allows us to share real-world insights, feasibility considerations and scientific evidence,” said Dobos, a cosmetic chemist and adjunct instructor in UC's Cosmetic Science Program in the James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy. “Without that collaboration, regulations risk being disconnected from practical implementation, which can lead to unintended consequences like supply chain disruptions or reduced innovation.”
