Will AI really replace your job?

Director of UC's Applied AI Lab answers common concerns

As artificial intelligence seeps into more careers, some people wonder if any jobs will become obsolete in the coming years, according to 700WLW.

Jeffrey Shaffer, director of Lindner College of Business’ Applied AI Lab, spoke with 700WLW on the future of AI in the workplace.

“The first thing is: Don’t be afraid of it. I think you have got to lean into the technology. Pandora’s Box is open. Everything is AI,” he said.

He explained how at Lindner, faculty and students are honing lifelong skills that will be necessary regardless of tech advancements. Shaffer said that skills like professionalism, preparation, accountability and respect can go a long way in any industry or trade and have been emphasized as key competencies long before generative AI.

“What’s really changed now is the tech side of it,” he added, stressing the importance of that human element people can bring to their careers.

He gave the example of invoice processing. While AI can automate many steps of the process, it lacks the critical thinking, judgement and ethical reasoning to handle key steps in the workflow, he said.
