“I want to inspire other people. That’s what keeps me going and what keeps me motivated to continue my academic pursuits,” says Anthony Brown, A&S ’30.
As a fourth-year English student and recipient of multiple scholarships, Brown is no stranger to ambition.
This year, Brown received the Richard William Vilter, Jr. & Barbara Watts Vilter Endowment Scholarship. The University of Cincinnati Department of English and Comparative Literature awards the Vilter scholarship to full-time students who enter the College of Arts and Sciences through a regional campus and show significant passion and achievement in the field of English.
Brown credits his scholarships with inspiring him to pursue multiple English disciplines, including a triple major in creative writing, English education and literary and cultural studies. He is also working towards minors in media production, fashion studies, marketing, sports administration and organizational leadership, along with three certifications in literary journalism, professional writing and copyediting and publishing.

Brown began his higher education journey at UC Blue Ash College in the fall of 2023 then transferred to UC’s College of Arts and Sciences the following year. Brown states that starting at a regional campus spared him financial stress, allowing him to focus on academics and eventually receive the Vilter scholarship. With hopes of working in higher education and becoming an English professor, Brown is thankful for the opportunities his scholarships have given him.
Brown says receiving the Vilter scholarship has further motivated him to become a better version of himself, not only as a person, but as a writer, a creative and a future educator. Despite the sleepless nights and academic challenges that come with the college experiences, Brown says that his scholarships encourage him to “keep going” and make every college experience worth it.
Brown is incredibly grateful to the Vilters and the generous people who make scholarships possible. “Scholarships keep students like me going and make pursuing additional educational opportunities possible,” he says. “Donors are the reason students keep going and keep studying to become better versions of themselves.”
