UC student veterans explore engineering careers
Stars and Stripes highlights mechanical engineering student's experience
Stars and Stripes magazine highlighted the international co-op experience of a University of Cincinnati mechanical engineering student who is working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in South Korea.
UC College of Engineering and Applied Science student Jenna Lutz is a cadet in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps or ROTC. But through UC's nationally recognized co-op program, Lutz got to work alongside military and civilian engineers.
Lutz learned about the co-op opportunity through UC"s Army ROTC program. Through the Army Corps of Engineers, she learned about design, project management and construction, among other engineering topics.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for a wide variety of civil and military projects from channel dredging to beach restoration to flood control.
Lutz worked in the Far East District where she was stationed at Camp Humphreys in South Korea. It's the United States' largest foreign military base.
“My internship in the Far East District is designed as a learning experience for the purpose of broadening my knowledge with regards to USACE,” Lutz told Stars and Stripes.
“The most rewarding aspect of my internship has been the connections I established with both veteran and active-duty military personnel,” Lutz said. “They have imparted invaluable advice I will carry forward into my military career.”
