CCM student pianist awarded first prize in Ohio MTNA Competition

Jiayi Lu is the Ohio state winner of the MTNA Young Artist Piano Competition

The Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) has named Jiayi Lu, a second-year DMA student studying piano performance at CCM, as its 2026 Ohio Young Artist Piano Competition winner. Selected from a field of 18 competitors as the state winner, Lu will represent Ohio in the MTNA East Central Division Competition, performing in an online-only video competition against winning pianists from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Each year, thousands of students compete for top prizes and national recognition in MTNA National Competitions, regarded as the most successful and prestigious student competitions in the country. Musicians must first be named winners of their state competitions to advance to the division competition; division winners advance to perform at the MTNA National Conference in St. Louis, Missouri in the spring.

Lu is a student of CCM Professor of Piano Dror Biran, whom she credits as a strong influence on her development as a pianist. “His teaching and guidance have been central to my musical growth,” Lu says. “I greatly appreciate his support as I prepare for performances and competitions.”

Lu is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, earning her Master and Bachelor of Music degrees, respectively. While in Manhattan, Lu studied with acclaimed pianist Yefim Bronfman, an opportunity very special to her.

In addition to her performance obligations, Lu serves as a piano pedagogy teaching assistant, leading group piano courses and private lessons. She says these teaching roles have been an important component of her CCM experience.

“Teaching has helped me communicate musical ideas more clearly and challenged me to adapt my instruction to students with different backgrounds and abilities,” she shared. “It encourages me to reflect on my own learning and practice, helping me grow as both a pianist and an educator.”

This year, Lu looks forward to performing in her DMA chamber music recital at CCM. On the program are favorites by Schumann, Liszt, and Shostakovich. She says she is especially looking forward to performing with her fellow ensemble members.

Winners of the East Central Division competition will be announced in the coming months. Visit the MTNA website for more information.
